Building houses, jobs, and community for those who have fought for the preservation of freedom and democracy for others.
Our Mission
Building houses, jobs, and community for those who have fought for the preservation of freedom and democracy for others. HeroHomes is a 501(c)3 not for profit foundation established to build houses for those who have fought for the preservation of freedom and democracy for others. These deserving vets and their families cannot regain what they lost defending our country, but we can give them a new start in building a solid foundation for their future and the dignity of an independent life in a wonderful small town community setting. We provide the opportunity for disabled veterans to rejoin society with the security and pride of home ownership.
Working alongside established veteran support organizations to identify and place deserving and injured veterans into our homes, we offer a number of program options:
- Veteran-purchased home
- Veteran-purchased with a portion subsidized
- Fully donated homes
HeroHomes relies on the support of donors and volunteers. Click to find out how you can help.

The inspiration for HeroHomes began in early 2015 when Jason Brownell was asked to manage a home building project in Lovettsville, Virginia for wounded veteran Tony Porta. Tony is a medically retired Marine corporal who was burned beyond recognition by a roadside bomb while serving in Iraq. The brave veteran suffered horrible burns to 35% of his body when his Humvee drove over an improvised explosive device in Al Asad, Iraq on May 5, 2007. Tony has undergone 128 surgeries to repair the burn damage. Incredibly, Tony has overcome his injuries and is now married to his wife Deicy and has a son whom he named Kenneth Charles in memory of his two deceased friends Kenneth and Charles who saved his saved his life that fateful day in Iraq. The brave veteran suffered horrible burns to 35% of his body when his Humvee drove over an improvised explosive device in Al Asad, Iraq on May 5, 2007. The blast killed his two best friends, Charles Palmer and Kenneth Mack, whom Tony says saved his life. Even though they were killed in the blast he heard them telling him to get up and he could still feel their presence.

While managing the home building project to completion, Jason developed a close personal relationship with Tony and became passionate about helping disabled veterans and their families. Jason recognized an opportunity to continue these home building efforts in his local community and formed a partnership with Aimee McGranahan and Matthew Lowers to establish HeroHomes.
